Creating Green Villages

Why Live Green?

Australians produce the second-highest amount of waste in the world. We throw away 3.3 million tonnes of food every year – a quarter of our national annual food supply.

We also have one of the world’s highest figures for household water use. The average Australian home uses 230,000 litres of water a year – 70% of Sydney’s total water use is consumed in our homes.

The Average Australian home spends $1,500 on electricity bills each year – 90% of our electricity comes from fossil fuels such as coal which generates greenhouse gas and contributes to climate change.

This high level of consumption is unsustainable.

We all have a responsibility to reduce our environmental footprint. There are many simple actions we can all take to make a difference and many will also help us save money.

How can you help?

  • Subscribe to the Green Village News for monthly updates on workshops, events, and green living tips delivered straight to your inbox.
  • Attend a free Green Village workshop.
  • Radically reduce your use of fossil fuels – especially coal – switch to GreenPower or solar energy.
  • Create more green spaces in your community and in your home. Trees and plants absorb CO2 and reduce heat island effect.
  • Support sustainable development and sustainable products.
  • Reduce the unsustainable levels of consumption we have become accustomed to particularly in the western world – aim for zero waste and reduce energy and water consumption.
