Plant a tree!

Each July the City organises a site for National Tree Day. Volunteers are encouraged to come along on the day to plant some native trees, shrubs and grasses in one of the City's parks. The events are publicised each year and for more information call the City of Sydney on 9265 9333.

Create nature in your backyard

To create your own little piece of nature it is wise to use the real thing as a blueprint. A variety of native shrubs and trees that flower in different seasons can provide food and shelter for birds.

A diversity of plants will encourage a diversity of insects which again encourages insect-eating birds. Bird baths on pedestals are also surprisingly popular with birds.

In Australia, birds don't really need extra feeding as they can readily find their food especially if gardens have native plants providing nectar, seeds, berries and insects.

Discourage non-native birds

Non-native birds can be a pest and residents are increasingly concerned about the havoc caused by species such as the introduced Indian Myna bird. Find out how to keep Indian Mynas out of your patch.
