Community Gardens
What are community gardens?
Community gardens are a unique form of public open space managed by the community. The gardens allow a forum where people can learn from each other, seek self sufficiency and build community spirit and a shared purpose.
Our ten community gardens have been sustained by the ongoing enthusiasm of the community and are used for growing herbs, flowers, vegetables, fruits and conserving rare plants and seeds. Most gardens also demonstrate sustainable principles including waste minimisation, water conservation and energy conservation.
Most gardens offer you the chance to minimise you household waste through utilising communal composting systems. Many of the gardens showcase practical and innovative reuse of pre loved materials as well as examples of a wide variety of organic mulches.
People love community gardens for lots of different reasons. You may want to: ‘get your hands dirty’; grow your own fresh, organic food; learn hands-on gardening skills; or simply relax. Community gardens are also a good way to get involved in your local area. You can: meet other people; share interests, ideas and cultures; and put something back into your local community.
Who supports the gardens?
Community Gardens in the City of Sydney area are supported by the City, along with a range of organisations including the Department of Housing, the Royal Botanic Gardens, the University of NSW and the Australian City Farms and Community Gardens Network.
How can I participate in a community garden?
