Beginner's guide to:

August – November 2008

1. Beginner’s guide to the internet – FREE

City of Sydney Library is offering a two hour beginners internet course showing people how to use the internet for research and recreational purposes.

The course will be two hours and elements of the course include understanding terminology, how to perform basic searches and how to evaluate information found on the internet.

Knowledge of how to use the mouse and finding your way around the computer is a prerequisite.

2. Beginner’s email – FREE

City of Sydney Library is offering a two hour beginners email course using web mail services. This two hour session will develop an understanding of how email works.

Learn how to set up a web mail account, send/receive emails with and without attachments, set up contact lists and distribution lists, organise email folders and protect yourself against junk mail.

3. Special Topics in Advanced Research

$15 for non-members / free for members. City of Sydney Library is offering a two hour course to learn how to: Search for information on a particular topic, learn about search strategies, how to use the library catalogue, online databases and the internet to search for information.

4. Social Communication

$15 for non-members / free for members. City of Sydney Library is offering a two hour course on using the social communication technology.

Learn what a blog is and how to set up one, learn about MySpace, Facebook, Flickr and other technologies and set up an account in some of these.

Learn about tagging using del.icio.us and explore applications for some of these sites.

5. Excel 2003

$20 for non-members / free for members. Afternoon tea provided. The City of Sydney Library will be offering a full day course in using Microsoft Excel 2003.

The course includes an introduction to the Excel screens, simple workbook, selecting ranges, copying and filling.

The course will also cover referencing, formatting cells, adjusting worksheets, working with functions, sorting, charting, labelling, protecting data, filters, linking and sharing workbooks. Basic ability to use a computer is a prerequisite for this course.

6. Word 2003

Afternoon tea provided. $20 for non-members / free for members. City of Sydney Library is offering a full day course in Microsoft Word 2003.

Learn to find your way around the Word 2003 screen, enter text, basic format, use styles, use fields, how to produce a flyer/card and do mail merge. Basic ability to use a computer is a prerequisite for this course.

Public Computers

Email, Web, Word Processing

Self-serve computers are available to the public across the City of Sydney Library Network.

There are 3 options to access the Internet at the library:

1. Internet 'Research' Only
Free web browsing for research is available at all branches (no email access). Free public access, no card required.

2. Self-serve Email, Internet and Word Processing
Use email, the Internet and word processing by buying a charge card at the front desk. Library members (with a charge card) can then use these computers free of charge, non-members pay for each half hour. No bookings are necessary.
Email, web and word processing computers are available at Customs House, Glebe, Haymarket, Kings Cross, Newtown, Ultimo and Waterloo. Printing is available.

  • Self-serve scanners are available at Customs House Library (2 on the ground floor, 2 in the main Reading Room, Level 2).
  • You can use your own USB or floppy disk. Floppy disks are available for sale at the main desk.


3. Free Wireless Internet
Visitors can now jump online at various locations thanks to a new Free Wireless Internet. Why not grab your laptop and drop in to Customs House, Glebe, Newtown, Ultimo, Haymarket, Kings Cross, Surry Hills, Town Hall, and Waterloo Libraries and connect to the Internet free of charge.

N.B: Please check the conditions of use. Customers must use battery-operated laptops. Free Internet access using the library's computers is also available.

Conditions of Use

Public Internet Access

City of Sydney Library Network operates under the provision of the NSW Library Act 1939 its amendments and regulations.

  • Users of the Internet must follow the directions of library staff
  • Access and use of the Internet by children (under 16) is the responsibility of the child’s parent or guardian
  • Laptops - users must provide their own battery operated laptops to use the wireless Internet service
  • The Internet must not be used for ; The display of material that is pornographic, obscene, in bad taste or which may be found offensive - The display of material or any act that may incite hatred or violence - Any illegal act or relating to any illegal act
  • City of Sydney Library has no control over the content of the Internet and reminds users that some such content may be offensive to other library users.
  • City of Sydney takes no responsibility for the security of personal or any other information users may choose to place on the Internet i.e. through Internet banking or by filling out any forms on the Internet
  • Users must adhere to all relevant legislation including copyright laws and licensing agreements

Inappropriate use of the Internet may result in cancellation of Internet access or further action including banning from the library.
