Adopt a Pet
Owning a pet is known to be good for your health and wellbeing. Domestic animals can fill a household with fun and are great companions for adults and children alike.
Of course, owning a pet is a responsibility. The animal will require food and veterinary care, as well as love and attention. All breeds of dog need regular exercise and some will need obedience training. The City provides off leash areas for dogs to exercise in and free pet education programs.
The City encourages responsible pet ownership and recommends you read the Companion Animals Policy to find out more about owning a cat or dog before you commit to adopting one.
If you can offer a feline friend or canine companion a loving home for the rest of its life, consider adopting a pet from the City.
Cats and dogs that have been picked up by the City's rangers are taken to the Sutherland Shire Animal Shelter for re-housing.
These animals are usually lost pets that we can't trace back to their owners because they aren't microchipped. Some have been dumped or neglected. All are looking for permanent, loving new homes.
Prior to being made available for adoption each animal is registered, microchipped and desexed.
