Bill Posters

Bill posters are an environmental hazard. They peel and create litter which can enter stormwater drains when it rains. This litter pollutes the harbour, endangering water quality and marine life.

To report bill posting call 02 9265 9333.

What is Bill Posting?

Bill Posting refers to an act of putting up posters you see around the city on telegraph poles, fences and hoardings. These posters are often posted in an uncontrolled manner without the permission of the owner of the property.

Enforcement

Bill Posting is illegal under the Protection of the Environment Operations Act as it is considered a form of pollution. The City of Sydney Council has the power to take action against those responsible for the offence.

City Rangers can issue on-the-spot fines when they witness someone in the act of posting advertisements. They can also issue Prevention Notices to the businesses involved in the advertising or bill posting. The Prevention Notice can place a commitment on an organisation to stop unlawful advertising in the public domain.

Other options, including the issue of Clean Up Notices which require those responsible for the advertising or bill posting to remove the articles, are available and may be used if appropriate.

Community notices such as garage sales, lost pets and local fetes are not considered bill posting.

The Good News

The City of Sydney provides free legal ways to promote your event in the form of poster pillars and listings on the popular What's On website.

Poster Pillars

The City has installed 9 pillars on popular city streets to provide a legal site for putting up advertising posters.

Poster pillars operate on a first come, first served basis, with posters removed every Tuesday.

Poster etiquette

The City encourages good poster etiquette. Please do not post over other posters unless they are out of date or there is more than one copy of the poster on view.
