Macquarie Place Park & Jessie Street Gardens
Macquarie Place Park and the adjacent Jessie Street Gardens contain a number of historic monuments and significant works of public art. The parks provide a welcome green retreat from the hustle and bustle within the CBD financial district and are popular lunch time spots for city workers.
One of Australia’s oldest public parks, Macquarie Place Park bounded by old sandstone walls and gate posts, consists of shaded grass lawns, native garden beds and granite paving beneath giant Moreton Bay Figs. The park contains numerous significant monuments including the anchor and cannon from HMS Sirius, the Obelisk of Distances, which marked the original centre of the Colony of Sydney, the John Christie Wright fountain, and a statue of T.S. Mort.
The Jessie Street (memorial) Gardens located across Reiby Place, was opened in 1990 and contains a number of memorials to women including the Pioneer Women’s Memorial, and the NSW Ex-Servicewomen’s Memorial bronze statue with various plaques dedicated to the wartime servicewomen of NSW. The Bonds of Friendship by sculptor John Robinson consisting of two interlocking rings is located in the northern section of the park, reflecting the original landing place of the First Fleet was a gift from the City’s sister city of Portsmouth, England.
