A royal visit to Redfern

Prince Wlliam visits Redfern

On Tuesday 19 January the Centre hosted a visit by Prince William – the Palace researchers chose the centre as the finest example of an integrated community facility that works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and their children as well as the rest of the community.

The event was a wonderful success with people from all backgrounds crowding to get a glimpse of the Royal visitor and Aboriginal Elders asking the Prince to follow up on several key issues including the return of Pemulwuy’s skull, other Aboriginal remains and land rights. Prince William spent over an hour in the centre meeting musicians, the young people in the youth program and played Wii with the children in the holiday program.

All our Centre staff felt extremely proud to host the event. However, it could not have gone so well without the positive response from Redfern residents who demonstrated the strength of the local community and their ability to work together to celebrate an important event for the Block.

Redfern Community Centre

Designed for all groups in the community, the Redfern Community Centre is a dynamic multipurpose facility that seeks to create and strengthen social links through shared cultural and recreational pursuits. It focuses on art, culture, employment and training initiatives, along with community events.
