50m Pool temporary closure at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre

 

Ian Thorpe

This iconic $40 million facility, housed in a distinctive wave-form building, was named in honour of five times Gold Medal winning Olympic Champion Ian Thorpe.

The centre offers a range of health and aquatic programs and services to cater for the diverse ages, interests and abilities of its surrounding communities.

50m Pool temporary closure at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre

The 50m pool at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo will be temporarily closed for about three weeks from Saturday 11 July 2009 to allow for essential maintenance works.

All other facilities at the Aquatic Centre including the gym, two other pools, sauna and steam rooms will remain open. Group fitness classes and personal training classes will continue as normal.

The two nearest aquatic facilities with 50m pools are Victoria Park Pool in Camperdown and Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic Centre in East Sydney

Members of Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre are being contacted directly about the temporary closure and will be entitled to use the pool at Victoria Park and Cook + Phillip Park free of charge during the closure.

Swim only members at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre will not be charged during the closure and can make use of other nearby pools.

Members of swim classes and fitness classes will be contacted directly if there are changes to their programs.
The 50m pool is expected to reopen early August.

  • When will the 50m pool at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre close?
    The 50m pool will close on Saturday 11 July.
  • When will it re-open?
    The 50m pool is expected to re-open in early August. Please check websites or contact the Centre to confirm.
  • What facilities will still be available at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre?
    All other facilities will be open as normal. Including:
    - Program Pool
    - Leisure Pool
    - Steam Room
    - Sauna
    - Gym (including cardio and resistance equipment)
    - Group exercise classes (except for Aqua Aerobics)
    - Personal Training
  • If I want to swim laps at a pool, where else could I go?

  • I’m a member of the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, what happens to me?
    You will still have access to all other facilities at the Centre. Plus you will have free access to Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre and Victoria Park Pool during the closure of the 50m Pool.
  • I have a swim-only membership – what are my options?
    Swim Only memberships will be suspended for the period of the closure which means you will not be charged.
  • I’m a member and I’m still being charged the same amount even though I can’t use the 50m pool – I don’t want to swim at any other aquatic centre.
    Please contact the centre directly and leave your details. Management will discuss your concerns further and work out a solution for you.
  • My kids have swimming lessons at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, will they still be on?
    Higher level classes will be suspended while the 50m pool is closed. Lower level classes will run on a revised program. Please speak to the staff at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre for specific details on class times.
  • I swim in the Bondi Fit squad at Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, has it been cancelled?
    No, Bondi Fit will be relocating squads to Victoria Park Pool during the closure. Please speak to the coach for updated timetables and further information.
  • I have a multi-visit pass, can I still use it?
    Your multi-visit pass will still give you access to the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre. You can also use your pass at Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre and Victoria Park Pool. The expiry date on the pass will also be extended by the period the 50m pool is closed.
  • I mostly use the Centre for its great gym, but occasionally go for a swim. Can I still do that?
    You can still swim in the Program and Leisure Pools and use the steam room as normal or you can visit Cook + Phillip Park Aquatic & Fitness Centre and Victoria Park Pool.
  • There is water in the 50m pool, but it’s still closed, why is this?
    The water in the 50m pool is being held to ensure excess water is not wasted. However, for the work to be completed all filtration and water treatment must be turned off.
  • How are you communicating to customers and members?
    Information about the closure is available via:
    - Notices around the Centre
    - On the Centre’s website www.itac.org.au and the City of Sydney website www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au
    - Via a media release
    Members will be contacted directly mail, email and/or SMS to alert them to the changes at the centre.
