Olympic legend Ian Thorpe back in the pool at the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre - 3 February 2011

Australia’s most successful Olympian Ian Thorpe announced yesterday he will compete at the trials for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. We were excited to see Thorpey hitting our aquatic centre bright and early this morning for some training laps.

Speaking at a press conference, Ian said: “While there was a time in my life that I thought I would never swim competitively again, things have changed, and I’m very excited to once again be back in the pool.”

This iconic $40 million facility, housed in a distinctive wave-form building, was named in honour of five times Gold Medal winning Olympic Champion Ian Thorpe.

The centre offers a range of health and aquatic programs and services to cater for the diverse ages, interests and abilities of its surrounding communities.

Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre is open all year round with the exception of Good Friday and Christmas Day.
