Book a Clean Up
White goods & large household items collections
The City offers a free kerbside collection for white goods and large
household items every Wednesday.
Bookings are essential and are taken up until 2pm on Tuesdays. Call us on
9265 9333 to book*.
*If you live in an apartment, ask your building manager or caretaker to book a collection for the building.
Items we collect include white goods, large appliances* and furniture such as:
- fridges,** washing machines, ovens, BBQs
- heaters, hot water systems and other metal household items
- small kitchen appliances like toasters and blenders
- sofas, rugs and mattresses (but not carpet or floor tiles)
White goods are recycled (they are used to make steel products, like cans) –
almost everything else goes to landfill. To reduce waste, why not try sell, give away or donate unwanted (working)
items first.
*A whole range of electronic appliances, goods and equipment – including televisions, computers and more can be recycled through the City’s regular e-waste collections.
**If you want to get rid of a second fridge, recycle it through the Fridge
Buyback Scheme and receive a $35 rebate (conditions apply). You’ll save around
$250 a year on your electricity bill too.
Items we don’t collect
The following types of items can’t be collected:
- liquids like cooking oil
- any sort of car parts (including motor oil, batteries and tyres)
- building, renovation or demolition materials
- timber, fencing or wooden palettes
- hazardous materials including paints and chemicals
- gas bottles
E-waste should be taken to one of our quarterly drop-off days.
Preparing for the collection
Due to health and safety reasons, we have strict guidelines on how items should be put out for collection. We can’t collect items that are not properly prepared.
Please note that the City can not collect waste from Private Property. Place items on the kerbside for pick up.
To prepare your collection:
- place your white goods separate to your large household items – they are collected by different trucks
- protect young children by removing fridge/oven doors and placing them next to appliances or tape the doors closed (this avoids the risk of suffocation and is very important)
- wrap and label sharp or dangerous items like mirrors and glass
- put small items into boxes or bags – loose materials won’t be collected
- keep your collection to 1 cubic metre per booking
- make sure all items (except white goods) are less than 1.5m or 100kg
- don’t block pedestrian, bicycle or vehicle access when putting items in a public place for collection
- put your items out the night before collection – if you put them out earlier, they might be considered illegally dumped.
Only put items out that you have booked in for collection. Otherwise, you
could be fined up to $1,500 for illegal dumping.
Items not collected on the day?
Call us on 9265 9333 (or ask your building manager, caretaker or a body corporate member to call on your behalf if you’re in a unit) to report the missed service; we’ll arrange collection as soon as possible.
