Lucas Street | Missenden Road

Lucas Street

The City is building a safe and convenient cycle network to reduce road congestion, cut emissions and improve public health. We have designed the network to improve connections between work, recreation and residential destinations to make cycling an attractive transport choice.

Lucas Street will become a contra-flow bicycle lane between Church Street and Missenden Road. A contra-flow bicycle lane improves safety for bicycle riders travelling in the opposite direction to vehicle traffic by providing them with dedicated space on the road.

Lucas Street provides an important link from Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and the University of Sydney, westward towards Stanmore. It will improve safety and make cycling attractive to residents, hospital workers, university students and other potential bike riders.

A detailed concept design can be found on the reverse side of this letter and proposes:

  • a 1.2 metre wide green painted contra-flow lane on the southern side of Lucas Street;
  • swapping existing parking along the southern side of Lucas Street to the northern side;
  • new line markings and bicycle logos on the cycle lane;
  • new bicycle friendly storm water grates;
  • two "P5 minutes" time restricted parking spaces will be removed on the northern side of Lucas St to allow access for larger vehicles where the street bends near Missenden Road; and
  • one "P5 minutes" time restricted parking space will be installed on the northern side of Lucas St as shown.
  • The changes will not affect the footpath, and we will work to minimise any traffic disruptions during installation.

The City is currently developing detailed designs for this cycleway and will notify you when they are complete.
