Missenden Road
Improving City cycle routes and pedestrian networks.
This project will deliver a safer environment for everyone and a safe an alternative bicycle connection between Newtown and Glebe / Anzac Bridge.
The City is committed to providing safe and connected bicycle routes that can be used for people of all ages and riding abilities. This will help to keep Sydney moving.
Dedicated safe spaces for cyclists and improved amenity for pedestrians were some of the most common requests from the community during the Sustainable Sydney 2030 consultations. The 2030 plan includes improved cycling and pedestrian networks to form a liveable green network across Sydney.
The aim of the City’s Cycle Strategy and Action Plan 2007-2017 is to increase cycling by 500 per cent , by providing the infrastructure to make cycling a safe and popular transport choice. The City will increase the cycling network by 200 kilometres. This includes up to 55 kilometres of separated cycleways and a 145 kilometre cycle network made up of other types of bike paths.
In conjunction with the cycleway, the project also enhances the streetscape with wider footpaths, new trees, improved pedestrian crossings and new thresholds defining the entry to Missenden Road.
The designs have been finalised in consultation with key stakeholders.
- The RTA has reviewed and approved the extensive modelling of the traffic arrangements for the street and is satisfied that the scheme is viable
- The STA has approved the scheme and has confirmed their concurrence to the lane arrangements and bus stop locations
- The Ambulance Service has reviewed the operational requirements of Ambulances into and out of the Hospital Emergency which are unchanged by the proposal
- The Taxi rank maintains its capacity for queuing in a new convenient location central to the hospital activities in the precinct.
The City will continue to liaise with the community and other stakeholders to ensure disruption is minimised during construction. Once a contactor is appointed, a dedicated Community Liaison Officer will be appointed to provide a single point of contact on site and regular updates to the community.
Summary
Key project features:
- Missenden Road will become a 40km speed zone
- The footpath will be widened on the western side of Missenden Road between Carillon Avenue and King Street
- To calm traffic and increase pedestrian safety, the road surface at the entrances to Longdown, Campbell and Aylesbury Streets will be raised
- A separated two way cycleway along the eastern side of Missenden Road and Lyons Road will be built
- In order to increase the efficiency of the right hand turn from Missenden Road into Carillon Avenue the right turn lane will be extended to 60 metres. This should improve the function of the intersection
- At Parramatta Road the cycle way will cross over to Lyons Road where it will continue to Pyrmont Bridge Road
- There will be a loss of approximately 48 short stay car parking spaces along Missenden Road, 3 parking spaces on Lyons Road, and 10 parking spaces on Carillon Avenue
- Distinctive road and footpath pavements will be created between Grose Street and Salisbury Road to calm traffic near the hospital
- The cycleway will link into existing cycling facilities on Wilson Street, via Bucknell Street, at the Southern end
- At the northern end, the cycleway will connected with future cycling facilities to Glebe Foreshore, from Pymont Bridge Road.
