Wentworth Avenue
More and more people are getting on their bikes – here in Sydney, the morning peak has grown an average 60 per cent this year.
The City is making sure that these new riders can get about safely – with cycling courses, a public education campaign and safe cycling infrastructure. The City has built 10 km of a planned 55 km of separated cycleways.
We are now working to link the CBD and Redfern with Alexandria and Green Square. As part of that link a separated cycleway on the western side of Wentworth Avenue to connect with the College Street cycleway is being planned.
The Wentworth Avenue cycleway will connect with the College Street cycleway in the north and paths shared by pedestrians and bike riders in Elizabeth Street and Prince Alfred Park in the south.
We know bike riding is not for everyone but we need to make it safer for those who do want the option. More riders on bikes means reduced congestion for people who need to drive and less overcrowding on public transport. Separated cycleways ensure bike riders have a safer and congested free route to their destination.

What it means for you
- A safer pedestrian environment
Pedestrian improvements include footpath widening, new pedestrian crossings, better kerb ramps and shorter road crossing distances.
- Additional street trees
28 additional trees will be planted providing a total of 59 trees in the street
- Local access changes
(i) The left turn from Elizabeth Street into Wentworth Avenue will be removed and replaced with access from Campbell Street and Castlereagh Street.
(ii) The left turn from Wentworth Avenue into Alberta Street will be removed and replaced with access into Alberta Street from Goulbourn Street.
- Safe street lighting
Street lighting will be assessed and improved for safety if necessary. Additional light fittings and light poles may be installed.
- Parking
Parking in Wentworth Avenue currently consists of a mix of loading zones, motorbike parking and general parking. While this proposal will see some reduction in street parking, parking will still be provided on both sides of the road and in nearby streets. To cater for the needs of local businesses the total number of loading zones will not be reduced.

- Public Exhibition held: 30 August – 20 September 2011
- Expected construction commencement: July 2012
- Expected completion: June 2013

The City held 2 information sessions with the City’s project and design managers. These sessions were held on:

- 13 September 2011 from 2pm - 4pm

Your feedback on this design is important to us. We are carefully considering all community responses. When the City has assessed community comments, we will tell you about any changes we will make to this proposed cycleway plan and project timeline.
