George Street, Erskineville

Cycleways

George Street | Flora Street | Concord Street

The City is building a safe, convenient and sustainable 200 kilometre cycle network to reduce road congestion, cut emissions and improve public health. We have designed the network to improve connections between employment, recreation and residential destinations to make cycling an attractive transport choice.

George Street

Wilson Street, Newtown

George Street is being investigated as a cycleway due to it’s’ links with Erskineville to the City, Newtown and Sydney University.

The proposed upgrades would lead to cyclists travelling in their own lane in the opposite direction to traffic on the eastern side of the road between Erskineville Road and Victoria Street, and on the western side between Victoria Street and Macdonald Street.

Key features of the upgrades on George Street include:

  • Making the road two way for cyclists while remaining one way for cars and other motor vehicles
  • Moving parking from the eastern side of the road between Macdonald and Victoria Streets to the western side so that cyclists can travel in their own lane in the opposite direction to traffic
  • Painting bike logos on the road in both directions to make it clear where cyclists should ride.
  • The removal of up to two parking spaces to comply with the road rules – one near the intersection of Erskineville Road and the other near Victoria Street.

Notification Letter

In April 2009 a letter was distributed locally providing information on the project and inviting comment on the design.

The City will provide residents and businesses with ongoing updates on all cycleway projects and the broader bicycle network.
