Blackburn Street

The City is committed to helping create a more integrated transport system through active support of light rail and cycling.

The benefits of providing a well designed, connected and safe network of cycle paths are substantial – from reducing congestion and carbon emissions to aiding healthier lifestyles and boosting pedestrian amenity to increased business outcomes. These benefits are not just limited to bike riders.

The City is methodically rolling out the bicycle network in a measured and responsible manner over the next four years, including comprehensive public engagement, pre, during and post construction.

Blackburn Street is an important link in the cycle network and a contra-flow bicycle lane is planned for between Elizabeth and Foster Streets.

Together with a proposed cycleway on Foster Street cyclist this will have a safe and convenient link between Hay and Campbell Streets, and this will help to link Haymarket and Ultimo to Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.

A contra-flow bicycle lane improves safety for bicycle riders travelling in the opposite direction to vehicles by providing them with dedicated space on the road.

About the Cycleway
The concept plan proposes:

  • a 1.1 metre wide green painted contra-flow lane on the southern side of Blackburn Street
  • new line markings and bicycle logos on the cycleway
  • new bicycle friendly stormwater grates
  • loss of one existing loading zone parking space.

The changes will not affect the footpath, and we will work to minimise any traffic disruptions during installation.

The City will provide residents and businesses with ongoing updates on all cycleway projects and the broader bicycle network.
