Imagine if the sky was falling. It is an image that can be found in many children’s books. A fantastical and surreal idea that belongs at the far edges of imagination.
As the world continues to heat up, we are confronted with the effects of over a hundred years of industrialisation, rampant consumption and an expanding global community. The image seems more tangible every day. Science has sent satellites, animals and then humans into space. We jump on a plane without thinking twice about filling the sky with metal birds. From the prophecies of early soothsayers to the scientific weight of global warming, the message is the same – the sky is falling!
The Sky is Falling evokes the possibility of change and recovery. The balloons, while apparently falling, hold an inherent possibility of rising upwards again, away from the ground. By creating a fantastical environment the audience is able to escape the fears of the real world and return to a time of childhood feelings where anything is possible, and dreams come true.
