The City of Sydney is delighted to present the sixth successive Art & About.  This festival transforms Sydney each October with an array of free exhibitions and events featuring works by top local and international contemporary artists.

New this year is Live Lanes, the reinvigoration of City laneways, a forerunner to the City’s strategy to upgrade up to 20 under-used lanes over the next decade. I encourage you to stroll down Albion Place Gallery to catch a glimpse of Sydney’s art scene with an exhibition by 33 talented local visual artists. You can also absorb the atmosphere at Bulletin Place Bar with a packed line-up of live music, performance and presentations by a myriad of local artists.

Art & About @ Circular Quay is a hive of vibrant activity. Child’s Eye 2030 is an inspiring collection of childrens’ poems and paintings exploring their visions for the future and projected nightly onto the AMP building. Similarly, sculptures and installations in Customs House Square and surrounds link the past with what our future may become.

Open Gallery returns throughout the City streets with nine brilliant and colourful original artworks on 780 street banners. Featuring Australian and international artists, this year’s Open Gallery extends to Oxford and William Streets, Darlinghurst Road and, for the first time, the newly upgraded Redfern Street.

The large format photographs of the Sydney Life photographic exhibition along the central avenue of Hyde Park are always impressive. The Exhibition carries a prize valued at $10,000, courtesy of AMP Capital Investors and the City of Sydney. The  inaugural People’s Choice Award has a prize of FUJIFILM Australia products worth $3,000.

Combining art with food, The Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Month Night Noodle Markets in Hyde Park North is a terrific way to spend a summer evening.

There’s a lot going on in other City villages. Join in the fun of the Danks St Festival in Waterloo on Sunday 21 October. Visit the nearby CarriageWorks in Redfern to ride Baby Love, a participatory art installation that will appeal to people of all ages.

I would like to thank AMP Capital Investors for sponsoring this Sydney event.  Great cities are made by their citizens and also by the corporations which interact with the community and contribute to a lively arts and cultural life.

There will be something to inspire you in Art & About. I hope you enjoy this celebration of our City’s creative and cosmopolitan spirit.
