Lord Mayor's Message

Welcome to Art & About, City of Sydney’s exciting feast of art, music and performance throughout the City and surrounding Villages during October.

This year, Open Gallery brings to our streets ten striking new works from Aboriginal artists across New South Wales. Presented in association with the Campbelltown Arts Centre, this exhibition on giant street banners has been curated by Djon Mundine OAM, and is part of City of Sydney’s commitment to celebrating the thriving creative spirit of Aboriginal people. This includes Eora Journey, a unique story telling walk from Redfern to Mrs Macquarie’s Chair planned as part of Sustainable Sydney 2030.

The City’s commitment to the Sustainable Sydney 2030 Vision is also on show in Taylor Square North, home to the Live Green House and the latest in green architecture, technologies and design. In addition, we celebrate social and cultural sustainability with vibrant, creative and diverse communities, an integral part of our City’s prosperity and livability. This is on display in our Villages and CBD throughout Art & About. In Kings Cross, local residents have worked with artists to create displays of knitting graffiti in surprising places. Oxford Street is home to a fabulous program of events, including a chance to “Shop Yourself Stupid” with our new Charity Partner, the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation. In the City, the popular Sydney Life photography exhibition returns to Hyde Park, and By George! will transform laneways off George Street with a range of exciting temporary art installations including an urban bar code created with fluorescent tubes, a canopy of birdcages and forgotten birdsongs and a temporary forest.
