| Sharing Memories and Stories of Redfern
The City of Sydney is currently preparing a history of Aboriginal Redfern. The aim is to produce a book that traces the history of Redfern as the heartland of Aboriginal activism from the 1960s to the present. It will highlight the many organisations and people involved through the years in creating the community.
The book is conceived as an anthology and will contain writings, photographs, newspaper clippings, posters, memorabilia and personal stories about Redfern’s Aboriginal history. It will allow many different ‘voices’ to be presented; especially those of Aboriginal people who have been involved in the development of Redfern.
A Strong Resilient Community
The book will be a resource for the community and students to take pride in and learn about the strong, resilient community history of Redfern. It is anticipated that the book will be completed in late 2009.
Sharing your story
The City of Sydney Council will be holding two community consultations at Redfern Community Centre, 29-53 Hugo Street, Redfern. These will be from 1.30pm following the community lunch on Wednesday 10 June 2009 and Tuesday 16 June 2009.
People are encouraged to bring materials to share and contribute to the stories of Redfern. Bring along your photos, poems, pictures, posters, memories, music and memorabilia. Nothing will be taken away, but copies may be requested of some items.
