arts and crafts stalls and lots of food to choose from including
Indigenous bush tucker. Activities to entertain and educate
the children are also on offer.
YABUN is FREE and easily accessible to people
coming from all parts of Sydney and beyond being located at
Redfern Park, close to the train station and bus routes. Redfern
Park has special significance due to the great connection
with the Indigenous community.
Senator Aden Ridgeway, Democrats Senator for NSW has credited
Yabun for providing “a positive focus in a world that
can sometimes seem relentlessly negative”. Senator Ridgeway
attended in 2004 and described Yabun, as “a big hit
with me and my family and Redfern Park was the perfect venue.
If you want to find out about Indigenous cultures in Sydney
come along to Yabun and experience it for yourself”.
Another
important member of the Aboriginal community who supports
Yabun is Member for Canterbury Ms Linda Burney who believes
“Yabun is an important gathering. It marks invasion
day, it celebrates our survival and it’s a chance for
all Australians to come together”.
Koori Radio General Manager Brad Cooke believes that Yabun
is a “true community event as it enables all ages to
come together and enjoy a friendly entertaining day and celebrate
the talents and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people”.
Yabun is produced by Gadigal Information Service Aboriginal
Corporation and saw the launch of Koori Radio 93.7fm in 2004.
Being an indigenous owned and run organisation, the event
is an example of community initiative and self-empowerment
within Sydney’s Indigenous community.
What better way to celebrate the day than with the original
inhabitants?
