James Wilson-Miller

Indigenous author and curator of Koori history and culture at the Powerhouse Museum, talks about the resistance fighters of the 1930s.

James Wilson-Miller:

'The most known about Aboriginal activist era in this country I suppose would be from the 1930s when we had people by the name of Jack Patten, Bill Ferguson, Margaret Tucker, Pearl Gibbs and people like that who were fighting for civil rights, for justice, for citizenship, for human rights, for reconciliation, and probably ultimately for lasting peace, in times when very few Aboriginal voices were being heard Australia -wide. You've got to look at Australia was in the grip of a depression at that particular point in time and we were heading into another world war, so most of the issues involved with indigenous Australians at that particular point in time were pretty much not there."
