Jonathon Bottrell

Jonathon Bottrell, curator of Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Cooperative, talks about the role of Boomalli in maintaining Aboriginal history and culture in Sydney.

Jonathon Bottrell:

"I think it's really important that as - the statistics are sort of based - most Aboriginal people live in urban areas and that means we're not sitting out in the desert hunting for food or living a traditional life and so we're in here in the city and we're … we, through out history we've been dislocated from our traditional lives and our traditional ways so a lot of people don't practice in a, in a like the notion of what Aboriginal art is meant to be, so this area provides them the platform to show their work - where a mainstream gallery or most people generally overlook them because they're not painting in dots. I think also Boomalli has a cultural significance in the fact that it provides a bit of a meeting place for all the artists to come on opening nights , everyone's usually here, so it's a big catch-up with everyone. It's really an important part of sustaining our culture."
