Harris Street

In Harris Street village, historic warehouses and woolstores have been converted into residential dwellings and offices.

These buildings are complemented by the newer medium and high density residential apartments that are spread across the village, with numerous parks and open spaces along the foreshore.

The village is also a significant tourism, education and cultural hub, which is bolstered by its proximity to the city centre and numerous cultural and tourist attractions.

Harris Street village is located in the north-west of the City of Sydney local area and includes the suburb of Pyrmont and part of the suburb of Ultimo.

It is bounded by the shore of Johnstons Bay and Darling Harbour in the north, Murray Street in the east, George Street and Broadway in the south and Wattle Street and the shore of Blackwattle Bay in the west.

The village is adjacent to Wentworth Park on the western boundary and Tumbalong Park on the eastern boundary, along with an abundance of parks and open spaces along the harbour foreshore, including Waterfront, Giba, Pirrama, Metcalfe, Ballarat and Pyrmont Bay parks to name a few.

The suburbs of Pyrmont and Ultimo, which combine to form Harris Street village, initially began as the location of seafaring and industry. The City West Urban Renewal Program in the early ’90s contributed to transforming the area away from its traditional land uses and more into a lively inner-city community. Many of the warehouses and woolstores have been converted into waterside, warehouse and loft-style apartments which now sit alongside new multistorey apartments that predominantly cater for young professionals, empty nesters and families wanting an inner-city lifestyle.

Chart 1 shows the distribution of dwelling types across Harris Street village. The majority of dwellings within this village are flats, units and apartments (90%), which is significantly higher than the City of Sydney local area average (76%). This highlights the prevalence of medium to high density dwellings in this village, with residents trading off smaller living spaces in order to live close to the amenities offered by the local area.

Connectivity

Harris Street runs the length of the village, from Broadway in the south to Johnstons Bay in the north. Harris Street is also the main entry and exit point of the village for vehicles travelling on the Western Distributor freeway, which connects to the western suburbs and the North Shore via Sydney Harbour Bridge. Another significant connection to the western suburbs is provided by Broadway, which runs along the southern border of the village, connecting to Parramatta Road. The village is also provided with significant cycling infrastructure, with a dedicated bike lane connecting the city centre and the inner west via Pyrmont Bridge and Anzac Bridge.

Figure 1 shows public transport infrastructure in the City of Sydney local area, including barrier counts for train stations and ferry wharves in 2012. There are no train stations or ferry wharves within Harris Street, however the village is served by the Inner West Light Rail line, which connects Central railway station to Dulwich Hill. In addition to the light rail service, the village is provided with several bus services, including the 443 from the city centre to the Maritime Museum and the 501 from the city to West Ryde.

The village has a major pedestrian connection to the city centre via Pyrmont Bridge which creates a passage over Cockle Bay and Darling Harbour. Consequently the area around Pyrmont Bridge is a focal point for pedestrian activity in the village. Pedestrian counts on Pyrmont Bridge Road near the corner of Murray Street conducted in October 2013 counted 19,600 pedestrians on a weekday and 20,100 on a weekend day. To put this into context, this compares to the equivalent numbers of 121,700 and 62,800 for George Street near the corner of Liverpool Street, one of the busiest locations in the city centre.

Facilities

Harris Street village has a diverse range of land uses offering significant areas of industrial, entertainment and educational usage. A cultural and education hub exists at the southern end of Harris Street with the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), TAFE NSW, Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Powerhouse Museum. This village also contains The Star casino and entertainment centre in the north, Sydney Fish Market and Jones Bay Wharf. Significant community assets, as shown in Figure 2, include:

  • Pyrmont Community Centre
  • Library Link Pyrmont
  • Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre
  • Ultimo Community Centre
  • Ultimo Library

In addition, there are numerous green spaces across the village including Fig Lane Park, Giba Park, James Watkinson Reserve, Mary Ann Park, McKee Street Playground, Metcalfe Park, Pirrama Park, Pyrmont Bay Park and Waterfront Park.

The City of Sydney Wellbeing (Residents) Survey highlighted the following opinions of residents regarding community facilities in their village:

  • high level of satisfaction with the number and quality of parks and open space in the local area
  • high level of satisfaction with the level of access to fresh food
  • access to public transport in the local area is high relative to the residents’ use of public transport to work/study
  • satisfied there are enough opportunities to participate in sporting and recreational activities in the local area.

Events

There are a range of public events held in the village that present opportunities for local businesses to engage with the community. Popular events include:

  • Pyrmont Festival: An annual event held over 10 days around May each year. The festival features over 50 businesses showcasing their goods and services, including restaurants, wine bars, hotels, winemakers and artists. There is also a program of live music and local artists in addition to food stalls, rides and children’s entertainment.
  • Growers Market: Held on the first Saturday of every month in Pyrmont Bay Park. The market features over 70 producers’ stalls selling produce such as fresh fruit and vegetables, meats, seafood and coffee.
