The City's economic development strategy identifies these sectors as priority industries, which currently deliver the greatest contribution to jobs in the local economy.
Representing over 7,800 businesses from around 21,500 within the City, the retail sector is a major employer and it is the foundation for our Village main streets that atttract many visitors to the City.
Over half of all international visitors and two-thirds of international business visitors to Australia visit Sydney, making the tourism sector a vital component of the City's economy as well as an important contributor to national and international recognition of Sydney as a great place to visit, live and work.
Sydney is a destination of choice for many international students with over 35,000 studying within the City each year. The economic contribution made by the sector is a crucial element of Sydney's culture and community.
Increasingly these sectors are contributing to a vibrant and diverse economy that represents over 61,000 jobs across the local area.
A main area of focus for the City is on innovative, high-growth companies, which have the potential to bring more economic and employment benefits to our local community than any other.
Over 20% of the finance sector in Australia calls Sydney home and it is a major part of the City's economy representing around 40% of all employment across the local area.
