Stimulating retail trade

Retailers will be able to use Sydney’s best plaza free of charge for up to 12 events and performances during a one-year trial period. Under our new program designed to support the local retail sector, new attractions will further expand Pitt Street Mall’s appeal to shoppers over the next 12 months.

In late 2013, Council adopted the 10-year Economic Development Strategy to strengthen the City’s economy and support business, together with the Retail Action Plan (PDF 1.8MB). This plan targets 4 main areas for supporting the retail sector, including the creation of innovative experiences to encourage more city workers, residents and visitors to shop in central Sydney, rather than online.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: "We aim to ensure that Pitt Street Mall retains its position as Australia’s premier retail destination by helping local retailers attract more residents, workers and visitors with exciting shopping experiences.

"Our new program makes it easy and affordable for large and small retailers to reach the more than 65,000 pedestrians who pass through the mall each day, as well as attract new visitors to the area.

"We are encouraging retailers to work together and think creatively about how they can use the mall to draw more people into the precinct," the Lord Mayor said.

The growing popularity and potential of this type of activation policy is confirmed by leading consultancy Urbis: "The programming and activation of these (large retail) spaces as part of the overall experience of the centre is a strongly-emerging trend in overseas markets  ... that can attract footfall in their own right."

The key to success is "to have a program of events and experiences that tie together to create a unique and market-responsive position for a particular place …This evolution has been coming for some time, and the opportunity is there in the Australian market to become the true leaders in retail centre space-making."

The City is holding a briefing on the program for Pitt Street Mall retailers and will provide ongoing support if you want to take part over the next 12 months.
