Sydney festivals are good for business

How you can profit

Hundreds of world-class events each year in Sydney and across NSW have important economic benefits for our business community, boosting visitor numbers and expenditure, hotel occupancy, and trade for local restaurants and retailers.

The City organises several keynote events in spring and summer and is a major sponsor of festivals including Sydney Festival, Biennale of Sydney and Mardi Gras. Our month-long seasonal celebration, Sydney Christmas 2013, saw local businesses take advantage of lively Christmas trade through Christmas in the Villages events.

Special campaigns attracted more consumers, while businesses featured in the City’s Christmas advertising through social media, local press and online. A total of 194 businesses participated, with Glebe leading (33) followed by Newtown (31) and Surry Hills (28).

Our hugely popular Chinese New Year Festival is one of the world’s largest, with our celebrated Twilight Parade attracting over 100,000 visitors. The central event for local business was Lunar Feasts, when 29 top Asian restaurants in central Sydney offered special festival menus, resulting in a huge 500 customer take ups per restaurant. Lunar Feasts was also one of the most-visited pages on the Chinese New Year website.

Vivid Sydney, a unique annual event of light, music and ideas, is Sydney’s principal winter festival. The success of the 2013 program illustrates the impact of the event on retailers, hotels and restaurants. Vivid attracted over 800,000 visitors to Sydney last year. It is estimated that restaurant bookings during the 18-day festival increased by up to 500%!
