  1. Have a vision, believe in it and don't compromise it.
  2. Prepare a business plan to understand what your business is all about.
  3. Talk early to people that can assist, seek out the specialists they are there to help. The City is friendly so come engage with us.
  4. Utilise the protections available to you, for example heads of agreement and get a good accountant.
  5. Ensure you understand operating procedures and compliance responsibilities.
  6. Don't get distracted by your competition - know what your personality is and stay true to that.
  7. Efficiency ultimately assists the bottom line.
  8. Customers are king! Customer service is your best advertising tool.
  9. Be a customer in your own business – sit in every chair.
  10. Be passionate! Remember passion can describe your personality of your business.

The City’s Business 101 seminars are designed for existing and budding small business owners. They provide an overview of how to open a business or take the next step to grow your business.

The seminars are a great chance to ask City of Sydney staff and industry experts questions about funding, development applications, licensing and other types of applications and meet others in your field.

Our calendar covers a range of topics, from restaurants and food trucks, to tech start-ups and the creative industries.

All sessions are held at Customs House from 6.30 to 8.30pm. Bookings essential.
