Glebe Point Road

Glebe, Forest Lodge, Annandale

The deregulation of liquor licensing laws in New South Wales has opened up new opportunities for small bars in the Glebe, Forest Lodge and Annandale areas.

A new Central Park redevelopment across from the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) will also give the area a major boost by attracting more residents, and provide new business opportunities through extra retail and office spaces.

There are also high-density housing developments along Broadway and on the old Children's Hospital site, with more being planned for the former Harold Park harness-racing track.

As more residents move into the area, more demand for retail and hospitality businesses could grow.

Already restaurant, pub and café businesses are popular in this area with Glebe Point Road being a hotspot for eating and drinking. Businesses involved with food and drink account for more than 15% of employment in the area.

The area is also wedged between three universities, which potentially supplies customers and employees.

Retail provides other business opportunities with bookshops along Glebe Point Road, the weekly Glebe markets and nearby Broadway Shopping Centre.

Besides hospitality and retail, the universities and institutions like the International Grammar School provide a lot of the employment in this area. Biotechnology also accounts for a small section of the workforce.

Most of the employment is along Broadway, in the southwest of the village area. This is where the UTS, Sydney and the Broadway Shopping Centre are situated.

Of the 10 City of Sydney village centres, Glebe Point Road has the highest percentage of floor space dedicated to residential use.

The local community is housed in a mix of private and public housing, with a greater ratio of females living here than the Sydney average.
