The planned refurbishment of the Sydney Fish Market could provide future retail, hospitality and tourism business opportunities to this area.
Until then the creative industries, higher education and research will dominate employment in this village, which sits on the Pyrmont and Ultimo peninsula. The area is home to media companies such as the ABC, Channel Ten and Fairfax, and educational institutions such as the University of Technology, Sydney and the Sydney Institute TAFE college. The Powerhouse Museum also contributes to the area's cerebral image.
Tourism also accounts for nearly one in five jobs in the village, the site of Sydney's Star casino complex.
The area, once dominated by port facilities in Darling Harbour, now has a large number of high-density residential developments, particularly in the Jackson's Landing area in the north of the peninsula. There is still some public housing in the area.
