Retail, hospitality and entertainment are the main business opportunities in this village.
The first suburban shopping centre outside the City Centre, King Street is now lined with hundreds of stores, more than 120 cafes and restaurants, and a thriving theatre, music and entertainment scene.
Chippendale boasts a handful of friendly pubs and numerous art spaces, including the new Frasers Studios and Pine Street Creative Arts Centre. Leafy Erskineville has a village atmosphere. Silent chimneys mark the now-defunct brickworks at St Peters, but the small inner western suburb is still quite industrial.
The village incorporates the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, with health and higher education and research the two biggest employers within its boundaries. Employment in the area is clustered on the block shared by the two facilties.
