How to set up local markets
Markets in Sydney continue to attract customers through a combination of product, place and people.
Established markets such as the Surry Hills Markets on the first Saturday of each month have become institutions in their own right, while newer markets such as Sydney Sustainable Markets at Taylor Square are quickly gaining a reputation for quality and sustainability.
The traditional look of a market is also changing, with the Picnic Markets in Prince Alfred Park that gives people the opportunity to sell whatever they can fit onto a picnic blanket.
The City's market policy establishes a framework for the City to approve markets, which outlines to market operators the level of commitment needed and provides a step-by-step process to help new market operators.
The policy applies to markets that are held more than 4 times a year on City-owned or controlled land.
The City will work with current and prospective market operators to ensure the traditions and excellence of community markets continue in the City of Sydney's local area.
Council endorsed the market policy and guide to setting up markets on 29 June 2015, after it was approved by the Cultural and Community Committee on 22 June.
Sydney's markets history
In the 19th century markets were an important part of the Sydney economy and the fees raised were a large portion of Council revenue.
The sites where these markets were held have long been used since for other purposes:
- fruit and vegetable markets where the Queen Victoria Building stands today
- cattle in Campbell Street, which gave us the area called Haymarket
- fish markets were originally in Forbes Street, Woolloomooloo.
