Sydney was born to be a star. Its natural beauty, climate, famous landmarks and well-developed infrastructure and facilities make it a popular location for film and television productions.
The City of Sydney supports the film and television industries because local and domestic productions that showcase the area provide economic benefits and help to promote Australian culture and ideas.
Local productions
Sydney has been used as a backdrop, either wholly or in part, for many major Australian film productions, including:

- Griff the Invisible
- Not Suitable for Children
- Burning Man
- The Sapphires
- The Eye Of The Storm
- Goddess
- Candy.
The City co-operates with the television extensively and Sydney has appeared in episodes of:

- Love My Way
- Home and Away
- Panic at Rock Island

- Devil's Dust.
Many local television commercials are also produced in the City.
International film productions
Sydney is well known for the quality of its local film facilities such as Fox Studios Australia at Moore Park and offers world's best practice technical support and services for film production. The City has successfully hosted a number of Hollywood productions including:
- The Wolverine
- The Great Gatsby
- Mao's Last Dancer
- Wolverine
- The Matrix and its sequels
- Mission Impossible 2
- Superman Returns.
The first locally-produced Bollywood film, "From Sydney With Love", screened in August 2012.
Advice and funding
There is City of Sydney funding available for local productions. To see if you are eligible, contact Grants and Sponsorships. Screen NSW offers project development, production investment, and support for industry and audience development. It also provides advice on locations, policy, industry contacts and production matters.
How we can help
The City of Sydney issues film and television producers with permits and helps make arrangements for parking, road closures, traffic control, and community liaison. To apply to film in the City, go to our filming permits page.
