Our Christmas

Greening Our Christmas

The City of Sydney is committed to a sustainable Christmas:

Greening Our Christmas
  • The electricity used to light up the City of Sydney's Christmas decorations is matched with 100% accredited GreenPower thanks to our sponsor EnergyAustralia.
  • The City will be reducing power by using LED lighting and by turning off all the City Christmas Trees lights between 2am and 6am, saving two tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
  • City streets will be cleaned using recycled water collected from the City's rainwater tanks, recycling plants and pits.
  • Rubbish and street litter collected from the events will be recycled where possible.
  • The City is calling on Sydneysiders and visitors to use bins provided at Christmas events or alternatively take rubbish home.
  • The City's Christmas decorations are reused.
  • The City's Living Colour plant displays are given away or made into mulch which is used in the City's parks.
  • The City's carol booklets are printed on 100 percent recycled paper and the City now produces an online Christmas card.
  • Our Christmas show bags handed out at each Christmas Concert are made from recycled City banners.
  • City of Sydney has entered into its second year of being carbon neutral. We became Australia's first carbon neutral local government by a detailed process to measure our greenhouse gas emissions from use of electricity and other energy sources. Our measurements have been externally verified and matched by the purchase of 100% accredited GreenPower and offsets. For more information visit www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Carbon
