TAYLOR SQUARE ART
2011-12

Presenting the history and challenges of Sydney’s Taylor Square in a new and energetic way, the temporary program Taylor Square Art gives local artists and arts organisations opportunity to create new work for the public to enjoy. Part of the City’s public art program, Taylor Square Art presents art that explores current issues including urban planning, sustainability, gay and lesbian rights and the public domain.

The thought-provoking collection of temporary art installations will help us engage with and develop conversations about Taylor Square. The City of Sydney supports the Oxford Street Cultural Precinct by creating prospects for local artists and arts organisations to attract new audiences through a range of dynamic and diverse programs. This is a key part of our Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan.

The City of Sydney is proud of its partnerships and collaborations with local artists, organisations and businesses. City Art acknowledges the support of the National Art School and UNSW’s The College of Fine Arts in the temporary art program.

We Make This City

Margaret Farmer Curator

Poetic and pragmatic, We Make This City is a form of urban acupuncture, tackling an urgentsocial question: Why, when so many of us are aware of and concerned about climate change, do we do so little to limit its effects?
Psychologists suggest that for many the problem is too great, too hard to truly confront; that others facing the problem experience states akin to grief, or may feel alone and inadequate in their efforts to take positive action; and yet others feel thwarted in their attempts by the apparent unsustainability of the urban environment or others’ lack of action. We Make This City takes these psychological states as cues and counters them, combating fear, risk and inertia with trust, beauty, community and action.

Featuring international, local and emerging artists, the diverse program of participatory works and events includes a bike powered cinema presenting an exciting range of film and new media; an inflatable installation that converts the water feature in Taylor Square into an intimate psychological journey; a colony of paste-ups and posters that connects through cutting-edge technology to the world’s coral reefs; and a site-responsive intervention and conversational hub operating on market days in March 2012.
