| Clover Moore MP Lord Mayor of Sydney |
During the last four and a half years we have worked to honour our commitments to you and to our city. We unified the amalgamated City and delivered the cultural change needed to focus our organisation on progressive policy and better facilities and services. We have acted on the imperative for a more sustainable Sydney now and into the future.
We are Australia’s first carbon neutral Council. We have cut water use in City parks, pools, depots and offices. We have a city transport plan and have begun construction on the City’s first separated cycleway.
We’ve upgraded more than 32 local parks, planted more than 5,000 street trees, landscaped at least 3,000m2 of gardens and traffic islands each year, and removed 3,400 signs to reduce clutter.
New facilities and open space include the impressive Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre in Ultimo, Harmony Park in Surry Hills, the beautiful Glebe Foreshore Walk and Sydney Park wetlands.
Other significant projects nearing completion on former languishing sites include Redfern Park and Oval, Paddington Reservoir, the Water Police site park in Pyrmont; Burton Street Tabernacle in East Sydney; and the new Surry Hills Library and Community Centre.
Public Domain & Amenity Greening our City
The City is constantly working towards greener, more beautiful public spaces. 5,000 new street trees have been planted, traffic islands and public gardens have been landscaped and “Living Colour” flower displays extended to more locations each year. The program to unclutter our streets has so far removed 3,400 unnecessary signs.
We are delivering linked open space, and sporting and recreation facilities to meet the City’s needs over the next 20 years. The Water Police site park at Pyrmont Point, Paddington Reservoir, Orphan School Creek at Forest Lodge/Camperdown and Balfour Street in Chippendale will be significant additions to City open space.
Our cultural strategy for Sustainable Sydney 2030 aims to reinforce creative opportunities in our City. We host and support events such as Chinese New Year, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, City Talks and Art & About. Sydney Festival’s First Night this year brought arts and culture to our streets and the City is a major supporter of Mardi Gras, the Sydney Writers’ Festival, the Sydney Film Festival and the Biennale.
The City has become Australia’s first carbon neutral Council through energy‑saving measures and the purchase of GreenPower. City energy savings will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 1.75 megatonnes per year and water savings by 72 megalitres (48 Olympic Pools).

Our area-wide $187 million capital works program provides needed services and facilities for a growing city. Design excellence and sustainability are incorporated in all our projects.
Libraries
The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre will soon open, setting new public building sustainability standards and providing a two-floor library and 26-place childcare centre. With Customs House, this adds to our extensive library network, now offering free wireless internet.

Supporting City CommunitiesRecognising our Indigenous Heritage
The City has signed a Principles of Cooperation agreement with the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council and we coordinate cultural events during NAIDOC week.
We are creating an Eora walking path from the Harbour to Redfern, and an Indigenous Cultural Centre will tell the story of Indigenous Australia. An Advisory Panel will guide the City on events, employment and cultural recognition.

Business & Community EnterpriseThe City aims to strengthen local business through forums, grants, promotions and sustainability programs. We are also upgrading and beautifying main street and retail precincts.
These include the CBD, Redfern and Regent Streets, Oxford Street and Darlinghurst Road, with work on Glebe Point Road underway. Upgrades are planned for Stanley Street, East Sydney and Harris Street, Pyrmont.
