Chinese New Year 2010 - Year of the Tiger

City of Sydney

Events / Dragon Boat Races

Join in the excitement of watching more than 3000 paddlers converge on Darling Harbour to race brilliantly colourful Dragon Boats in a heart stopping competition. City of Sydney’s Chinese New Year Festival races are now the biggest Dragon Boat meet in the southern hemisphere, and a much-loved crowd pleaser. As the boats surge through the waters to the pounding beat of the drum, thousands of spectators cheer on the paddlers, making this event a truly memorable experience. Don’t miss it!

Dragon Boat Awakening Ceremony

Did you know that, according to Chinese tradition, an eye dotting ceremony is required to bring a dragon boat to life? This includes "awakening" the dragon boats, by dabbing red paint on the eyes of each dragon boat's "blind" figurehead. See the eye dotting ceremony and the blessing of the waters during the opening morning of the races.
