Chinese New Year 2009 - The Year of the Ox

Celebrate the Year of the Ox with Oxfam
and bring happiness where it's needed most

There is no doubt that we will need the good natured patience and the physical stamina of the Ox to overcome global poverty. But we also need your support. So as part of the Chinese New Year festivities, we invite you to celebrate the Year of the Ox by supporting Oxfam's programs in China.

Oxfam Australia has been working in China for more than 20 years to reduce poverty and create a better life for people in the poorest provinces of Southern China (Yunnan, Guangxi and Guizhou).

In these regions, people live on less than 50 cents a day and are often so remote that making a living is almost impossible, while basic services like hospitals or schools can be non-existent.

Oxfam works closely with communities to improve food production, bring health and education and provide income from agricultural programs. We also work to improve infrastructure by building clean water sources, roads and bridges.

Some examples of how you can help Oxfam to bring happiness to people who need it most:

  • $88 can buy 2 pigs to begin a pig-raising business - double the joy!
  • $168 can build a water tank to provide safe, clean drinking water
  • $518 can build a bridge, so people can get their produce to market and children can get to school
