Lord Mayor's welcome
You can make new friends, learn new skills or help someone in need with one of our many projects when you become a volunteer with us.
Warm welcome for newest Sydneysiders
Koalas, kangaroos and lifesavers have extended a warm Aussie welcome to more than 1,000 students from nations around the world at Sydney Town Hall to mark the start of their new life in the city.
The Lord Mayor’s Welcome to International Students brought together community groups, health and safety services and Sydney’s leading tertiary education institutions to inform students about services offered across Sydney and to help them settle into their new hometown.
Members of the NSW Surf Lifesaving Club were among the 20 community groups and organisations on hand to share valuable information with the students.
Also on hand to offer support to the students were members of the Redfern Legal Centre, the only legal service in the state providing a dedicated free legal advice service for international students.
Research has shown the vast majority of the city’s international students felt safe in Sydney, and that Sydney’s culturally diverse community provide them with a valued support network.
The City of Sydney’s international student wellbeing survey also revealed 9 out of 10 visiting students recommend Sydney as a great place to live and study.
The Lord Mayor welcomes you
On behalf of the people who live and work here, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Sydney – one of the most exciting and diverse cities in the world.
Our community includes people from over 180 nations. This mix of cultures, histories, experiences and stories makes our city a great place to live, visit, work and study.
With a lifestyle that is second-to-none, Sydney is Australia's most exciting education destination. We have leading research facilities and instructors, giving overseas students great educational opportunities.
Sydney offers a fantastic lifestyle with experiences at cafés, shops, bars and restaurants as well as some of the best and most inspiring arts, culture and natural environments to be found anywhere in Australia.
Sydney is a city that is alive with opportunity and possibility. While you study here, you will be able to enjoy sport and cultural events, including our spectacular New Year's Eve celebrations and the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations held outside Asia.
I also encourage you to engage in your local community and participate in volunteering opportunities to enrich your experience here and learn more about the local culture and people.
This dynamic, accessible and safe city is just waiting to be explored – welcome to our great city.
