What we do
We aim to make Sydney an inclusive and accessible city for people of all abilities.
Providing accessible facilities and inclusive services fosters the participation of all and improves our city. Suggestions on how we can continue to improve access for people with disabilities are actively encouraged (see right).
As well as making the physical components of the city more accessible, for example by continuing to install and maintain kerb ramps, we endeavour to make the City of Sydney an inclusive organisation by:
- providing major Council documents and other information in alternative formats on request
- introducing new access initiatives such as Sydney Town Hall tours for people who are deaf or have hearing impairment.
Our plan of action
The Inclusion (Disability) Action Plan 2007-2011 was developed after an extensive review of our facilities and services and consultation with the community.
It outlines the work we are continuing to do on access and inclusion for people with a disability. It also acknowledges what has been achieved by the 3 former councils that now form the City of Sydney.
The plan is available to download in a variety of formats below. Other formats are available on request.
Taking advice
In 2012 we called for expressions of interest from people who can provide the City with expert advice on improving inclusion for people with a disability.
We received 59 applications of an exceptionally high quality and sought independent advice from the chair of the Disability Council of NSW. The 10 members were selected for what their combined talents bring to the panel. More than half have direct experience with disability issues, either personally or through a caring and support role. The panel will meet at least 5 times a year, which has been appointed for a 1-year term.
Find out more about each member of the Inclusion (Disability) Advisory Panel.
