Off Your Rocker

Off Your Rocker

Alexandria Seniors Writing Group

When it was suggested that the Alexandria Seniors Writing Group publish a book of their works, they jumped at the chance.

The Seniors Writing Group, which formed over 10 years ago, is made up of women aged between 55 and 80 years who come from all walks of life. It’s been a long-held dream of the group to publish their poems and stories, and share their work with others.

“We couldn’t have published Off Your Rocker – Writings of the Alexandria Seniors Writing Group without the support of a City of Sydney grant,” says group member Rosemary Owen. “It was one of the most exciting things to happen in a long time.

The group applied to the City for a grant to write, publish and launch an anthology of personal stories to support the active lifestyles of local seniors.

Rosemary says that applying for a grant was much easier than expected, and the City provided the group with the support that they needed throughout the process.

A story from one member of the group has even been turned into a short film called The Flower Girls.

And this group of enthusiastic women has more plans in the pipeline. “We are planning an exhibition of stories and photographs from families within the area,” says Rosemary. “And at some point, we would like to do Volume Two of ‘Off Your Rocker’.”

You get the feeling that there are many more volumes of ‘Off Your Rocker’ still to come, and these women are motivated to make it happen.
