Home security in holiday periods

Crime prevention

Secure your home

Your risk of being a victim to theft can increase during holiday periods and summer months.

We work closely with NSW Police to raise awareness on ways you can protect yourself from opportunistic crime while you are away on holidays.

Safe City offers the following tips for securing your home:

  • Always lock up – whether you’re stepping out for a few minutes or going away on a holiday, always secure your home.
  • Don't advertise your valuables – keep items out of sight and dispose of packaging carefully.
  • Remember to lock your garage, garden shed and other storage areas containing valuable items.
  • Ask a neighbour to keep an eye on your property or park their car in your driveway.
  • Ensure your home looks lived in – mow your lawns, put your lights on timers and ask a neighbour to collect your mail.
  • When leaving for your holiday, avoid packing your car too early, or in view of possible thieves.
  • Install security doors, lock windows and activate your alarm.
  • Ensure your home insurance is adequate and up-to-date.
  • Leave your contact details and destination information with a trusted family member or friend.
