Free child restraint checks

Free child restraint checks

City residents

We offer a free child restraint check and installation to local residents.

The free service has been extended after the number of people using the program doubled over 2 years from 253 in 2012/13 to 510 in 2014/15. The program has continued increasing with 775 vouchers issued in 2015/16 and 902 in 2016/17.

We provide vouchers for use at Roads and Maritime Services approved restraint checking stations, where you can watch the installation process and learn how to adjust shoulder straps to appropriate heights and find out when a child is ready to move to a bigger seat.

Australian law requires children travelling in cars to be secured in approved restraints, which means children:

  • younger than 6 months must be secured in a rear-facing restraint
  • 6 months to 4 years must be secured in a rear or forward-facing restraint
  • 4 to 7 years must be secured in a forward-facing restraint or booster seat
  • younger than 4 years must travel in the back seat of a vehicle with 2 or more rows.

If you live outside the City of Sydney local area, please contact your local council for information about nearby child restraint checks.

Free child restraint checks will be offered to local residents until 30 June 2018.
