Bush tucker magic
The beautifully restored Gardener’s Lodge in Victoria Park has reopened as a café serving bush-tucker food.
Aboriginal Elder Aunty Beryl Van-Oploo, from the Gamillaroi people of north-west NSW, is one of three hospitality teachers running the café and is incorporating training for young Aboriginal people into the business.
The sandstone building’s restoration recently won the Office of the Valuer General Heritage Award. Work included restoring the sandstone exterior and the battlement-style roof features, installing a state-of-the-art kitchen and protecting the heritage features and façade from salt and water damage.
The City also installed energy-saving LED lights, a solar hot water system and rainwater tank, and grey water recycling for use in toilets.
Aunty Beryl is working with the City’s parks team to plant indigenous herbs and plants around the café and hopes to introduce educational tours for small school groups.
