Mardi Gras: 35 and fabulous!
Mardi Gras: 35 & fabulous!
After 35 years, Mardi Gras’ history of struggles and triumphs is part of Sydney’s story. Today Mardi Gras continues to raise awareness of critical issues facing the GLBT community.
Mardi Gras attracts approximately 375,000 people every year, including an average 25,000 extra visitors to the city, injecting $30 million into the local economy.
This year, the City has helped establish a temporary museum on the corner of Oxford and Palmer streets in Darlinghurst in addition to the funding we’ve provided Mardi Gras through our major festival program. The museum will give people an insight into the inspiring and often tumultuous history of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras with archival items from the past 35 years.
Other highlights include the internationally-renowned parade along Oxford Street, art exhibitions, live performances and Fair Day in Victoria Park.
