On the verge

The City is working on a new checklist that makes it easy for residents and businesses to plant gardens on verges and install planter boxes on nature strips, without blocking footpaths or creating trip hazards.

Once the scheme is approved, we’ll subsidise the cost of planter boxes for the first six months – pensioners will get up to $150 and other residents up to $75. We’ll also provide public liability coverage for planters and gardens that comply with our simple guidelines, including:

  • Planting native or water-wise plants
  • Using organic rather than synthetic fertiliser
  • Avoiding spiky vegetation, protruding stems, stakes and guide wires
  • Avoiding tall vegetation that blocks sightlines
  • Allowing enough pedestrian access
  • Using the ‘Dial Before You Dig’ service to avoid contact with underground pipes and cables.
