Sydney City News May 2013

This newsletter details the latest initiatives, programs, developments and coming events and attractions across the City of Sydney.

Local democracy under siege – Local Government in NSW and our rights in a democracy are under unprecedented attack.

Our Eora Journey begins – 'Welcome to Redfern', by celebrated artist Reko Rennie and a group of young local Aboriginal artists, has transformed a terrace at The Block with vibrant graphic designs and murals of inspiring Aboriginal leaders.

Creative City – We are developing a cultural policy for Sydney – the first step is asking people who live, work and visit the city what kind of cultural life they want.

Surry Hills light rail – The NSW Government has committed to building a $1.6 billion light rail network that is set to transform how we get around our city. The City supports this initiative and has worked in consultation with the NSW Government on the George Street route.

Companion animal taskforce report – About 60,000 companion pets are killed in NSW every year, as abandoned and surrendered animals and unwanted litters end up in pounds and shelters.

Pockets of fun – The City has worked with the young creative minds of Redfern to design our newest pocket park and playground.

Putting the heart into Green Square – Green Square’s future library and plaza is set to become a landmark focus for the Green Square community. The library will sit below an extensive public plaza with a storytelling garden, an amphitheatre and even a water play area.

Making parking easier – The City’s new draft parking policy is now on public exhibition. We are reviewing our parking policies to improve access for visiting friends and family and to make delivery options easier for local businesses. Quick shopping trips will also be easier for motorists.
