Photographer Peter Solness' hand -painted torchlit landscapes were exhibited by ARTHERE at Storm Gallery in May this year. As a direct result, this new selection of work is being featured in the Level 1 Exhibition space at Customs House, Circular Quay, from late October until end of January 2010.
Entitled Nocturnal, this collection of images features Aboriginal rock art illuminations from locations on Sydney’s coastline and in Sydney Harbour and playful interpretations of the landscape, delivering a storybook quality to these night scenes.
This exhibition displays a new level of confidence in the well-proven illumination skills of this master photographer. Depsite appearances, the images are not heavily tweaked in post-production - rather they are created in camera. Solness mainly works alone, his lighting method requiring a methodical and patient approach. Often it can take nearly a whole night to create one image. The process is slow, however Peter embraces it as a kind of meditation and the resulting magic in these images belies this lengthy process.
The images will be illuminated on light-boxes in one of the exhibition spaces at Customs House. There will also be video footage of Solness at work – a fascinating piece of cinema giving insight into the artist at work.
