Sydney Park Boardwalk

The new boardwalk is the latest addition to the Park’s wetland / water management system and represents a major contribution to the City of Sydney’s delivery of sustainable environments.

Made from beautiful recycled timber, the boardwalk runs for 150 metres along the wetland and includes viewing platforms, seating walls and grass terraces. The boardwalk works with the natural aesthetics of the park and acts as a sophisticated architectural feature in its own right.

Working to both preserve the parklands and open them up for public use, the $650,000 boardwalk project provides a wonderful scenic tour through this 44-hectare, historically rich location.

Background

Representing more than half of the open space and recreational resources of the Southern Sydney area, Sydney Park is also the largest park in the City of Sydney.

Establishing environmentally sound systems in Sydney Park has been of key importance to the City as the park due to its unique foundations. Located on top of what use to be Sydney's major Brick Kiln area, a thriving industrial district and then ultimately a land fill site, has meant much time and resources have been devoted by the City to create a specialised ecologically sustainable plan for the park.

Having undergone major transformations since Council took possession of the site from the State Government 1991, Sydney Park’s development represents some of the most current ecological and reclamation practices for landfill sites, and the City’s commitment to sustainable environments.
