Temporary works approval

If a footpath or roadway will need to be temporarily closed or partially obstructed during development or works activity, a temporary works approval is required.

The approval can include hoisting activity using swinging stages for minor façade works only such as painting and cleaning, and associated required temporary barricading of the public place below the hoisting zone.

Other temporary works activity includes the placement of:

  • ladders
  • mobile scaffolding placed on a footpath/roadway
  • concrete line pumps at grade and pedestrian ramps over
  • barricades for abseiling work on or cleaning building facades
  • barricades for suspended scaffold (swinging stages) not covered under hoisting activity
  • temporary vehicle driveways/laybacks or other works in the public place.
An application can include multiple frontages of the same building.

temporary works application must be lodged at least 2 working days before the date of the proposed works being undertaken.

A traffic/pedestrian control plan drawn by a red or orange ticket RMS accredited person may also be required with the application, in accordance with AS 1742.3 and the Roads and Maritime Services’ Manual for Traffic Control at Work Sites where pedestrians are required to be diverted from the footpath.

Works zones

Generally, all loading and unloading of material for a construction or work site must be done within the property boundaries. If this is not possible, a works zone application may be required to allow vehicles to stand on the roadway to load and unload.
