CNY18 community performance program

Expressions of interest

2018 marks the Year of the Dog and we are shaking up the Lunar Lanterns community performance program as part of the Sydney Chinese New Year Festival. We are moving away from street level pop-up style performances and creating a professional theatre production to showcase your amazing community performances.

The performance director will be creating 2 curated 1-hour shows featuring the best community performances.

The show will take place on an 8m wide raised stage with professional lighting, audio and staff. The stage will be themed and have undercover protection.

We are inviting community groups who specialise in highly choreographed performances (traditional and contemporary) to be part of the show by submitting an expression of interest. Your group or performance must celebrate the Lunar New Year, celebrate cultures that observe the Lunar New Year or the Year of the Dog.

Message from the festival curator

In 2018 we are celebrating the Year of the Dog and we're looking for community groups to take part in the Lunar Lanterns community performance program.

You are the heart of the Sydney Chinese New Year Festival and we want to showcase your talents and help promote your organisation in this vibrant celebration. The festival attracts a wide audience and the 2017 event was experienced by over 1.3 million visitors.

In celebration of man's best friend, festivities during the Year of the Dog will be playful, joyous, and family oriented – a dazzling mix of culture and inspiring artistic talent.

We’d love to hear from you. This is a wonderful opportunity for your performance group to shine and bring the Year of the Dog to life.

We look forward to receiving your submission.

Festival Curator

Performance brief

We are inviting expressions of interest from groups wishing to participate in the Lunar Lanterns community performance program.

The show will take place on a custom designed stage at a city centre location. There will be 2 shows created and each performance will be shown on stage 3 times during the 2018 Sydney Chinese New Year Festival.

If successful, your group will be placed into either Performance Show A or Performance Show B. You must be available to perform at all shows, as follows.

Performance Show A

1 hour on the evening of:

  1. Friday 16 February
  2. Sunday 18 February
  3. Saturday 24 February

Performance Show B

1 hour on the evening of:

  1. Saturday 17 February
  2. Friday 23 February
  3. Sunday 25 February

Successful groups will be paid a one-off amount of $500 for their involvement and commitment of performing 1 routine 3 times over the festival period. If successful groups have more than 1 routine which the performance director would like to include in the program, then extra payment will be offered.

For example, 'ABC Dancers' submit 2 dance routines of 5 minutes each that were successful and incorporated under Performance Show A. They will perform each routine 3 times and have a total of 6 performances as part of Performance Show A (totalling 30 minutes in performance time). For each routine, 'ABC Dancers' are paid $500, therefore the total payment received will be $1,000.
